For more than twenty years, Ardbeg fans the legendary “Committee” have had one single request at the top of their wishlist: a cask-strength version of the flagship whisky 10 year old. Aside from a near-mythical, highly limited release in Japan back in 2003, the “Ten” at its raw, undiluted power has remained a ghost.

That wait ended in February 2026.
Ardbeg has officially answered the call with the Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength (2026 Committee Release). This isn’t just a higher-proof version of a classic; it is a “momentous celebration” of everything that makes Ardbeg the most revered smoky malt on Islay.
The Power in the Bottle
To create this release, Dr. Bill Lumsden and Master Blender Gillian MacDonald didn’t just pick standard barrels. They hand-selected a series of American oak bourbon casks, including experimental barrels that were uniquely filled with new-make spirit at an unusually high strength.
The result? A formidable 61.7% ABV—making it the highest-strength Committee Release in the distillery’s history. It is non-chill filtered and bottled in its most “feral” state.
🥃 Tasting Notes: The Raw Power of Islay
If the standard 10-year-old is a measured, graceful drop, the Cask Strength version is “Raw Power” set to music.
- The Nose: Even from two feet away, the peat leaps out. It is massive and oily, dominated by rich tar, creosote, and hot bitumen. Underneath the heavy smoke, there are marvleous flickers of toffee, coffee grounds, and sea spray. Add a drop of water, and the classic “Ardbeggian” fennel and lime notes begin to fight their way through the bonfire embers.
- The Palate: The texture is incredibly mouth-filling and spicy. You’re hit with an immediate “flash” of intense sweetness—think smoked cinnamon and paprika—before the waves of soot, tar, and peat moss take over. It’s dense and heavy on the tongue, balanced by a gentle malty, biscuity core.
- The Finish: It leaves an extremely long, ashy footprint. There is a cooling spray of eucalyptus and a warming trail of toasted cinnamon pastries. Five minutes later, you can still taste the smoldering peat.
A New Chapter for the Distillery
This release also marks a significant milestone for the distillery team. It is the first Committee Edition unveiled under the tenure of the new Co-Chairs: Master Blender Gillian MacDonald and Distillery Manager Bryony McNiven.
By delivering exactly what the fans have been crying out for, they’ve set a bold tone for the future of the distillery. It shows that while Ardbeg loves to experiment with weird and wonderful releases (like the recent Anthology series), they still know how to honor the “Smoky Beast” that started it all.
The Verdict
At an RRP of £75, this is a “must-buy” for anyone who calls themselves an Ardbeggian. It captures the spirit of the distillery in its most honest, intense, and unadulterated form. It’s loud, it’s big, and it’s exactly what we wanted it to be.
If you managed to snag a bottle during the February drop, consider yourself lucky. You’re holding a piece of Islay history to try.
