The best Indian single malts of 2026, tried and ranked

The best Indian single malts of 2026 span everything from rare single casks to everyday bottles, and we have tasted across all five major distilleries to rank them. Some of our favourites are limited releases poured at Whisky Live Paris and The Whisky Show in London, the kind of bottle most people will never see. Others are core expressions you can buy today. This list covers both: our three standout drams of the year, ranked, followed by the best Indian single malts to actually buy, sorted by style and budget.

How we chose

Every whisky here is one we have tasted in person, most of them at Whisky Live Paris 2025 and The Whisky Show in London in 2025, where the Indian distilleries showed up in force. We have worked through the full Indri range, all six Rampur Jugalbandi cask experiments, five years of Paul John Christmas Editions, both Godawan expressions and Amrut’s rarest single casks.

The top three below are the most memorable single malts we tasted this year. They are special, limited and not always easy to find, so beneath them we have picked the best buyable bottles by category, all of them from the same tastings.

The three best Indian single malts we tasted

1. Amrut Collection Itinéraires single cask #3976

This was the standout. A Whisky Live Paris 2025 exclusive and one of the rarest things Amrut has bottled, it is triple distilled, which is unusual territory for the distillery, and bottled at full cask strength from a single ex-bourbon barrel.

At a glance

Distillation: triple distilled, unpeated Indian barley Cask: single ex-bourbon cask #3976 Filled / bottled: November 2016 / July 2025 ABV: 60% | Outturn: 120 bottles | Exclusive to: Whisky Live Paris 2025

Triple distillation gives a cleaner, more refined spirit than Amrut’s usual double-distilled style, and the ex-bourbon cask brings vanilla, honey and citrus, while close to nine years in Bangalore’s heat at 60% adds real weight and tropical depth.

Our tasting note

Nose: ripe tropical fruit at full power, caramel and vanilla, citrus in the background Palate: bold tropical fruit, plenty of caramel and vanilla, kept fresh and lifted by the ripe-fruit brightness Finish: warming, with the tropical sweetness carrying through

This is Amrut at full volume but with a freshness the triple distillation brings, and it earned its place at the top of our year.

2. Indri Diwali Collector’s Edition 2025

Indri’s annual showpiece, and the most polished dram of the year for us. The 2025 edition is finished in Sicilian Marsala wine casks, which give it a deep, mahogany colour and a rich, fruit-laden character. It went on to be named Best World Whisky at the Las Vegas Global Spirits Awards with a near-perfect score.

Nose: stewed apricot, cherry, plum, nutty spice, vanilla, honey Palate: red berries, dark chocolate, nutmeg, walnut, Marsala sweetness Finish: long and fruity, with oak lactones ABV: 58.5% | Cask: Marsala wine cask | Outturn: 180 bottles (UK) | Price: approx. £250

3. Rampur Jugalbandi No.6 Madeira

The pick of Rampur’s experimental Jugalbandi series, which we tasted in full. Number six matures in American bourbon barrels and finishes in Madeira wine casks, and it won Best World Single Malt at the John Barleycorn Awards 2025. At cask strength it is intense, but the tropical Rampur signature carries it.

Nose: lychee, peach, apricot, mango, caramel, pecan Palate: citrus peel, grilled pineapple, passion fruit, dried fig, raisin, spice Finish: chocolate, baked orange, warm spice ABV: 55.8% | Cask: bourbon barrels, Madeira cask finish | Bottled:2024

The best Indian single malts to buy, by style

The three above are special-occasion bottles. These are the ones worth buying for the shelf, all tasted alongside the rest, sorted by what you are after.

Best for beginners: Indri Trini. The triple-wood Trini is the easiest way into Indian single malt, all orchard and tropical fruit with enough oak to stay serious, at a fair price. It is the bottle we would hand a Scotch drinker first.

Best everyday value: Rampur Double Cask. Matured in bourbon and sherry, this is the dependable, fruit-forward house style of India’s oldest distillery, and one of the better-value malts in the category.

Best peated: Indri Agneya. India’s answer to a peated malt, lightly smoked with green apple and sultana underneath, and a Double Gold winner at ADI 2026. Proof that Indian distilleries can do smoke with their own accent.

Best cask strength: Indri Dru. The full-power version of the Indri style at 57.2%, aged in ex-bourbon, with all the fruit of Trini and far more weight behind it.

Best wine-cask experiment: Rampur Asava. The world’s first single malt finished in Indian Cabernet Sauvignon casks, layering dark fruit and a dry, tannic structure over Rampur’s tropical character. A genuine original.

Best for something different: Godawan 02. Diageo’s desert malt, finished in cherry wood and casks treated with Indian botanicals, gives a brighter, spicier dram you will not find anywhere else.

Best festive bottle: Paul John Christmas Edition. Each year’s release changes its casks completely, so it is always worth a look. The 2025 edition was the distillery’s first eight-year-old, finished in cream sherry casks.

The verdict

If you want the best Indian single malt experience money can buy and you can find it, chase the limited releases: the collector editions and single casks are where these distilleries do their most exciting work, and our top three are proof. If you want the best Indian single malt for your shelf, start with Indri Trini, add Indri Agneya for smoke and Rampur Asava for something adventurous, and you have a small collection that shows the full range of what India now does.

Either way, the headline is the same one we keep coming back to. Indian single malt is no longer an emerging curiosity. In 2026 it is one of the most exciting and varied corners of world whisky, and these are the bottles proving it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Indian single malt whisky? For everyday drinking, Indri Trini is the best all-round Indian single malt, easy to appreciate and fairly priced. Among rarer bottles, standouts in 2026 include Amrut’s triple-distilled single casks, the Indri Diwali Collector’s Edition and the Rampur Jugalbandi series. The best choice depends on whether you want a shelf bottle or a special-occasion dram.

What is the best Indian single malt for beginners? Indri Trini is the best Indian single malt for beginners. Its triple-wood maturation gives an approachable, fruit-forward profile that a Scotch drinker will immediately understand, and it sits at a sensible price. Rampur Double Cask and Godawan 02 are also gentle, easy entry points into the category.

What is the best peated Indian whisky? Indri Agneya is one of the best peated Indian single malts, a lightly smoked whisky with green apple and sultana beneath the peat that won a Double Gold at the ADI competition in 2026. Amrut and Paul John also make well-regarded peated expressions for drinkers who want more smoke.

Are Indian single malts worth the money? Yes. At the £45 to £65 mark, bottles like Indri Trini and Rampur Double Cask often deliver more flavour intensity than Scotch at the same price, because India’s climate matures whisky faster. The rarer collector editions and single casks cost more but represent some of the most exciting whisky being made anywhere.

Which Indian distillery makes the best whisky? There is no single answer. Amrut is the pioneer and makes the rarest single casks, Indri is the fastest-rising and most versatile, Rampur is the most cask-experimental, Paul John excels at seasonal releases, and Godawan is the most distinctive. The best distillery depends on the style you prefer.
