Fèis Ìle (pronounced roughly “Faysh Eela,” Gaelic for “Islay Festival”) has run every year since 1986. Who is Douglas Laing, and what is Big Peat?
Douglas Laing is an independent bottler founded in Glasgow in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing. Rather than running its own distillery, the company sources and bottles whisky from across Scotland, with a stated philosophy of presenting the spirit as the distiller intended: no colouring, no chill-filtration.
Big Peat launched in 2009 as the first release in Douglas Laing’s Remarkable Regional Malts range. It is a blended malt, a vatting of single malts with no grain whisky, drawn exclusively from Islay. The recipe typically combines Caol Ila for sweetness, Bowmore for balance, Ardbeg for medicinal, earthy depth, and the closed Port Ellen for a touch of elegance, alongside other undisclosed Islay malts.

What the 2025 release got right, and why it matters for 2026
The 2025 limited edition was built around restraint. A 2010 vintage, 15 years old, matured exclusively in refill hogsheads, bottled at 50% ABV without colouring or chill-filtration.
Refill hogsheads are casks that have already held whisky through one or more cycles. They contribute almost nothing in terms of additional flavour, which is the point. The wood barely touches what’s inside. What you get is the spirit itself.
