Bowmore has pulled the cover off its next big collaboration, and it is not another distillery or another cask type. It is a New York art studio.
The project is called Beyond the Threshold, a partnership between Bowmore and Snarkitecture, the studio that works at the meeting point of art, architecture and design. Bowmore is holding most of the detail back for now, but the creative origin story is already the interesting part, and an earlier regulatory filing tells us a good deal about the bottle itself.
What Bowmore has actually confirmed
For the moment, this is a teaser rather than a full release. Bowmore frames Beyond the Threshold as a new interpretation of the distillery, something meant to reveal itself in layers rather than land all at once, with the full details still to come. There is no confirmed name, price or release date on the official page yet, and Bowmore is pointing people to its My Bowmore account for priority access and updates.
The substance, and the reason this is worth paying attention to, is where the design came from.
From New York to the No.1 Vaults
To start the work, Snarkitecture co-founder Alex Mustonen travelled from New York to Bowmore’s No.1 Vaults on Islay, one of the oldest maturation warehouses in Scotland. The vaults sit below sea level on the shore of Loch Indaal, and they are a large part of why Bowmore tastes the way it does: slow, cool, coastal maturation with the sea quite literally on the other side of the wall.
According to Bowmore, that visit shaped everything that followed: the depths of the warehouse, the irregular Islay landscape, the carved voids and openings of the island, and the slow way light and time move through the vaults. Mustonen arrived as a designer and left with a reading of what Bowmore is rather than just what it looks like. Whatever the finished object turns out to be, it is being built on the distillery’s actual character rather than a logo swap.
The bottle behind the campaign
Here is what the marketing has not said out loud, but the paperwork has.
A US TTB filing logged in January 2026 lists a Bowmore Captivo Collection, Edition 01, “Oak Voyage,” a 20-year-old bottled at 50.8%. Bowmore also registered the “Captivo” trademark in the UK and other markets in mid-2025. None of this is officially tied to Beyond the Threshold by Bowmore yet, but the timing lines up cleanly, and a design-led 20-year-old Islay single malt just under cask strength is exactly the kind of bottle this campaign is building toward.
Treat Oak Voyage as strongly indicated rather than confirmed until Bowmore says so directly.
Who is Snarkitecture?
Snarkitecture is a New York creative studio co-founded in 2008 by Alex Mustonen and the artist Daniel Arsham, working across art, architecture and design. Its signature is minimalist, material-led work that finds something unexpected inside the familiar, a surface that turns into a portal, an ordinary form that becomes a question. The studio is best known for large public installations such as The BEACH, which filled a Washington museum hall with close to a million translucent balls, and Fun House, a walk-through of immersive rooms, alongside retail and brand work for names like Kith and Dior. Mustonen led the Bowmore collaboration and made the trip to Islay.
Who is Bowmore?
Bowmore is the oldest licensed distillery on Islay, founded in 1779 and today part of Suntory Global Spirits. Its house style is one of the more balanced on the island, pairing peat smoke with citrus, tropical fruit and soft maritime notes, which gives it the room to build a 20-year-old around wood and time rather than smoke alone. The No.1 Vaults at the heart of this collaboration are one of the reasons that style exists.
