The Oak Masters’ Series has spent the last two years travelling the world for rare wood, from American white oak to Japanese mizunara. For its latest release, Glengoyne looked about five miles up the road.

Glengoyne Scottish Oak is a 17-year-old Highland single malt matured first in a combination of refill bourbon and refill sherry casks, then finished for two years in virgin Scottish oak. The trees for those casks were grown in sustainably managed woodland around the village of Killearn, only a few kilometres from the distillery. It is bottled at 51.6% ABV in 700ml as a limited release, and it arrives already carrying an IWSC 2026 Gold Outstanding award and a score of 98 points.

What is Glengoyne Scottish Oak?

Scottish oak is the newest expression in Glengoyne’s Oak Masters’ Series, a long-term platform built around a single idea: what happens when you take Glengoyne’s fruit-forward, unpeated Highland spirit and let a specific, unusual oak shape it.

This one is the “home” chapter of that story. Where earlier releases in the series looked outward, Scottish oak looks at the ground the distillery actually stands on. Quercus robur grown in Scotland is one of the rarest woods used in Scotch whisky, partly because so little of it is managed for cask timber, and partly because it takes a great deal of patience to season and coadjust into casks. Using it for a full two-year finish, rather than a few passing months, is the point of the release.

The distillery describes the effect of the wood as added structure, a fine spice and subtle complexity, while keeping Glengoyne’s natural fruit character intact. The label sums the profile up as heather honey on the nose, warming ginger on the palate and a long finish with sweet spice.

A journey home: what the Oak Masters’ Series is doing here

The Oak Masters’ Series launched with the White Oak range, two American oak expressions including a limited 24-year-old, and continued with a 16-year-old finished for six years in virgin Japanese mizunara. Each release picks one oak species and gives it room to work.

Scottish oak completes a neat arc. Glengoyne’s name comes from the Gaelic for the valley of the wild geese, and the geese that winter behind the distillery migrate thousands of miles across the Atlantic each year. The earlier White Oak release took its cue from that journey out to North America. Scottish oak is the journey home, with the wood sourced from the distillery’s own doorstep and the packaging illustrated in the style of Scottish watercolourists.

There is a sustainability thread running through all of this as well. The Killearn woodland is managed forestry, and Glengoyne has tied the release to its wider environmental work around the wetlands and wildlife near the distillery. For a series that is fundamentally about wood, sourcing that wood responsibly and locally is a coherent way to tell the story.

Who makes it: Glengoyne in brief

Glengoyne was founded in 1833 at the foot of Dumgoyne Hill, north of Glasgow, and sits right on the Highland Line, the historic boundary between the Highlands and the Lowlands. It has been owned by Ian Macleod Distillers since 2003.

The house style is built on two things. First, unpeated spirit: Glengoyne air-dries its barley rather than using peat smoke, so the fruit and malt come through cleanly. Second, slow distillation, with the distillery running what it likes to call the slowest stills in Scotland to build a fuller, rounder spirit. Sherry cask maturation has long been central to the core range, which makes a series dedicated to other oak types a genuine change of direction rather than a marketing exercise.

On paper that reads like classic Glengoyne fruit with a spice frame around it, which is exactly what you would hope a virgin Scottish oak finish would add. At 51.6%, there is enough strength to carry the wood spice without water, and enough room to open it up with a few drops if you prefer.

Scottish Oak is a limited release available through Glengoyne directly at glengoyne.com and the distillery visitor centre shop, and through specialist retailers including Hard To Find Whisky. It is also confirmed for wider European distribution, with German availability reported as imminent, so buyers in Germany and the rest of the EU should see stock through the usual specialist importers.

The exact RRP had not been widely published across markets at the time of writing, so check the distillery site or your preferred specialist for the current price in your currency. For context, the earlier Mizunara release in the same series carried a UK RRP of around 300 pounds and sold through quickly, and awards like an IWSC Gold rarely make a limited bottling hang around longer.

Scottish oak is aimed at the drinker who already likes Glengoyne’s fruit-led style and wants to see it wearing something less familiar than sherry.
