The Glenturret Deux Terrains is a 21 year old single malt Scotch whisky finished in casks that once held Sauternes from Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey, a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate in Bordeaux.
It is the distillery’s first release finished in Sauternes wood, following initial maturation in sherry-seasoned oak. Deux Terrains is bottled at 42.8% ABV in 70cl and limited to 500 individually hand numbered bottles. The price is £750, available exclusively online at theglenturret.com with shipping across the UK and most of Europe.

What is Deux Terrains?

Deux Terrains is a 21 year old single malt Scotch whisky from The Glenturret, Scotland’s oldest working distillery, based at The Hosh in Crieff, Perthshire. The whisky was laid down in sherry-seasoned oak and later transferred to casks sourced from Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey, the Sauternes producer that shares ownership under Lalique with The Glenturret itself. That shared guardianship is the point of the release: two estates, two countries, one owner, and a whisky built to reflect both.

The name translates from French as “two lands” or “two grounds”, a direct reference to the Highland distillery and the Bordeaux vineyard the liquid has passed through.

Why the Sauternes cask matters

Sauternes is a sweet, botrytised white wine from the Sauternes appellation south of Bordeaux, and Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey has held Premier Grand Cru Classé status since the 1855 Bordeaux classification. Casks that have held Sauternes carry residual sugar and the concentrated fruit character of botrytis-affected grapes, which tends to push a whisky towards stone fruit, honeyed sweetness and a softer, rounder profile than a straight sherry or bourbon cask finish.

For The Glenturret, this is new ground. The distillery has built its limited edition range on sherry, PX and now Sauternes influence, and Deux Terrains marks the first time Sauternes wood has been used across the range. Whisky maker Bob Dalgarno oversaw the vatting and finishing.

The Glenturret Deux Terrains: tasting notes

According to the distillery, Deux Terrains opens with bright pineapple and a poised aromatic lift, moving into caramelised apple lightly dusted with spice. Vanilla and seasoned oak build gradually, joined by warm wood spice, ginger and sweet cinnamon alongside ripening citrus. The texture is described as soft and fruit-led, closing on a refined finish of toasted oak.

Who is The Glenturret?

The Glenturret is Scotland’s oldest working distillery, producing spirit at The Hosh in Crieff, Perthshire since the 18th century. Since 2019 the site has operated under Lalique ownership, which also runs the on-site Aberturret House and the Michelin-starred Lalique Restaurant, and the distillery has increasingly used that connection to source finishing casks from other Lalique-linked estates, of which Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey is the latest example. The distillery’s limited edition range has included PX sherry releases such as Eclosion alongside high-end Lalique crystal decanter editions running well into five figures.

Is it worth £750?

At £750, Deux Terrains sits well above The Glenturret’s PX releases like Eclosion (£95) but far below the brand’s Lalique crystal editions, which start in the thousands. For that price you’re buying a 21 year age statement, a genuinely novel cask finish tied to a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate, and a run capped at 500 bottles, which is scarce but not eye wateringly small for the price bracket.

This is a release for collectors of Glenturret’s limited editions and for drinkers with a specific interest in dessert wine cask finishes, rather than an everyday dram. Anyone looking for a first taste of Sauternes cask whisky at a lower price point may want to wait and see whether the finish trickles down to a more accessible release. Given the 500-bottle run, this is one to act on quickly if the story appeals, rather than a whisky you can expect to find in a year’s time.
