We were invited to the unveiling of The Couture Blend, the second masterpiece born from the collaboration between Johnnie Walker Master Blender Dr. Emma Walker and Balmain’s Creative Director, Olivier Rousteing. This isn’t just a bottle; it is a “liquid manifesto” of style, progress, and fearless artistry.

The Atelier Beneath the Streets

The story of this blend begins in the Johnnie Walker Vault, a hidden “atelier” tucked deep beneath Princes Street in Edinburgh. Here, Emma Walker manages a library of over 10 million casks, but for this project, she narrowed that world down to just ten extraordinary whiskies.

The tasting was a rare, guided journey through the “skeleton” of the blend. Dr. Emma Walker walked us through secret drams that represent the different eras of Olivier Rousteing’s life, particularly marking his 40th birthday—a milestone reflected in the inclusion of several whiskies aged for at least 40 years.

The Anatomy of the Johnnie Walker Couture Blend

Emma described the process as “creating tension,” much like a couture show. We tasted the individual components that make up this singular profile:

• The Ghost Whiskies: Rare spirits from long-closed distilleries like Port Dundas and Caledonian, providing a foundation of heritage.
• The Cloak of Smoke: A special ghost cask from Port Ellen was used to wrap the blend in a sophisticated, wispy peat.
• The Experiments: We explored a “spicy chocolate malt” experiment from Teaninich (offering tonka bean notes) and luscious, tropical fruit-forward Roseisle matured in ex-wine casks.
• The Harmony: The final blend weaves these with Mizunara, Oloroso, and Pedro Ximénez casks to create a symphony of warm spice and rich molasses.
