Johnnie Walker Fill Your Own Bottle: the Edinburgh souvenir no one can copy

Written by

·

There is a bottle of Johnnie Walker on our shelf with our own name engraved into the glass. Every time we open it and pour for friends, the first question is the same: how did you get your name on a Johnnie Walker? That bottle is the Johnnie Walker Fill Your Own Bottle experience, and it is the one thing from the building we do every single time we visit.

This is the spoke review. For the full picture of the venue and the other tours, start with our Johnnie Walker Experience Edinburgh guide.

What is the Johnnie Walker Fill Your Own Bottle experience?

Fill Your Own Bottle sits on the ground floor of Johnnie Walker Princes Street, in the shop, right as you walk in. You do not need a tour ticket to do it. With a guide alongside you the whole way, you hand-fill a bottle of a Princes Street exclusive blend, write yourself into the ledger, set on your own label, and engrave the bottle.

The liquid is the part people miss. You are filling a Johnnie Walker seasonal blend, bottled at 48%, made exclusively for the Princes Street experience and not sold anywhere else in the world. Filling a bottle straight from source like this is normally something you only get to do at a distillery, not in a city-centre shop.

The result is a 70cl bottle that is genuinely one of one: your blend, your label, your engraving, your signature in the book. Nobody can buy it, and nobody can copy it.

The seasonal blends: what you actually fill

The exclusive comes as four seasonal blends across the year, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, each bottled at 48%. Usually two are available at any given time depending on when you visit, so the bottle you take home is tied to the season you were there. We have filled both ends of the range.

Spring / Summer seasonal blend our note

Nose: fresh orchard fruit, citrus
Palate: bright, fruity, light on its feet
Character: the summery, easygoing side of the range ABV: 48% | Type: Princes Street hand-fill exclusive

The lighter one, and the easier crowd-pleaser. Fresh and fruity, the kind of blend you open on a warm evening without much ceremony.

Autumn / Winter seasonal blend our note

Nose: red berries, dried fruit, dates, raisins
Palate: tart red fruit, dried fruit, noticeably fuller and weightier
Character:the cold-weather side of the range, richer and more serious ABV: 48% | Type: Princes Street hand-fill exclusive

This is the one we reach for in winter. More weight, more dried fruit, a tart red-berry edge, and enough body to sip slowly after dinner. If you visit in the colder months, this is the keepsake to take home.

How the experience works, step by step

It is more of a ceremony than a transaction, which is the point. You start by signing and dating the ledger, writing yourself into the Johnnie Walker history book in the building. Then you hand-fill the bottle yourself. Then you apply your own label, and finish at the engraving station, where one of their machines cuts your message or motif into the glass.

Whether it is a gift for someone you care about or a bottle for yourself, the engraving is what turns it from a souvenir into a story. Every bottle we have filled comes with a conversation attached, and that is exactly why we keep doing it.

Why it is the best souvenir in the building

Most things you can buy at a whisky attraction, you can buy elsewhere. This you cannot. The blend is store-only, the label is yours, the engraving is yours, and your name is in the ledger. For an international visitor, that combination is hard to beat as a thing to carry home from Scotland, and it makes a serious gift for a whisky friend.

Is the Johnnie Walker Fill Your Own Bottle worth it?

Yes, and of everything in the building this is the one with the longest payoff. The seasonal blend launched at around £80 for a 70cl bottle, so expect to pay in that region and confirm the current price in store. For that you get a genuinely exclusive blend at 48%, a personalised and engraved bottle, and a souvenir nobody else can replicate.

Who is it for? Anyone, frankly, but especially anyone who wants to bring home something from Scotland that is theirs alone, and anyone shopping for a whisky lover who already seems to own everything. The only people who should skip it are those who only want the liquid value, since you are paying partly for the experience and the exclusivity, not just the whisky in the glass.

Our rating: 4.5 / 5

How to do it and where

Fill Your Own Bottle is in the ground-floor shop at Johnnie Walker Princes Street, 145 Princes Street, Edinburgh EH2 4BL. No tour ticket is required, though tour ticket holders get 10% off in the shop on the day, so it pairs well with the Journey of Flavour or the Cask Draw Tasting. Ask any member of shop staff and they will walk you through it.
