Kenny Dalglish Vintage Moments is the first release in Gordon & MacPhail’s new Vintage Moments service: a box set of five rare single malt Scotch whiskies, each distilled in a year that marks a turning point in Sir Kenny Dalglish’s life. Only 15 sets exist, each holding five 70cl bottles. The set opens with a 1951 Glen Grant, the year Dalglish was born, bottled in 2026 at 49.8% ABV and titled Debut Appearance. Price is on application, with buyers registering through Gordon & MacPhail’s Director of Prestige, Stephen Rankin. The same service will let a handful of private clients build their own five-vintage set.

A Glen Grant distilled in 1951 and still sitting at 49.8% ABV after the best part of 75 years in wood. That is the bottle Gordon & MacPhail chose to open its new Vintage Moments series with, and it is called Debut Appearance because 1951 is the year Sir Kenny Dalglish was born.

What is Kenny Dalglish Vintage Moments?

Vintage Moments is a bespoke service from Gordon & MacPhail, the Elgin-based family firm founded in 1895. The idea is simple to explain and very hard to copy: a client names five years that matter to them, and Gordon & MacPhail finds a single malt distilled in each of those years from its own maturing stock.

Dalglish is the first name on the list. He was asked to choose five years from his lifetime and the values that shaped his career, and each one was matched with a vintage from the Gordon & MacPhail warehouses. In his words, choosing just five years that meant the most wasn’t easy.

The launch film sits Dalglish down with his daughter, sports presenter Kelly Cates, his biographer Henry Winter and Stephen Rankin, Gordon & MacPhail’s Director of Prestige, to talk through the stories behind each pick.

A 1951 Glen Grant still at 49.8%: the bottle that opens the set

The 1951 is the one whisky drinkers will look at first, and for good reason. Most spirit that spends seven decades in a cask in Scotland loses strength steadily, and very old single malts often arrive close to 40% ABV. A 1951 still holding 49.8% points to a cask that kept its spirit remarkably well over a very long time.

Glen Grant fits the story. The Rothes distillery in Speyside, founded in 1840, is known for a light, fruity house style, and Gordon & MacPhail has a long history of bottling very old Glen Grant vintages. Speyside is the river valley in north-east Scotland that holds the largest concentration of malt distilleries in the country, with Elgin and Rothes a few miles apart.

The bottle itself is a heavy-based decanter with a gold screw cap, “1951” in large type and the Gordon & MacPhail stag below. Gordon & MacPhail has not published tasting notes for the set.

Five years, five chapters: reading the vintages

Gordon & MacPhail keeps the stories behind each year for the film, but anyone who followed Dalglish’s career can read the timeline on the labels.

The 1951 marks his birth in Glasgow. The 1967 bottle, titled Into the Lion’s Den, lands in the year Celtic’s Lisbon Lions won the European Cup and the year a teenage Dalglish signed for the club. We would read that as the start of his Celtic story.

The 1974 vintage matches the year Dalglish played for Scotland at the World Cup in West Germany. 1977 is the year he left Celtic for Liverpool, the move that took him on to three European Cups as a player.

Whatever the official stories are, the format works: each bottle reads as a chapter, and the box closes like a book.

Why Gordon & MacPhail can make a set like this

Very few companies in Scotch could offer a service built on any year a client chooses. Gordon & MacPhail holds maturing stock covering every vintage from 1948 to 2023, filled with spirit from more than 100 Scottish distilleries. It began as a grocer and wine and spirits merchant in Elgin and became one of the best-known independent bottlers in the world, with its own distilleries at Benromach and The Cairn.

That warehouse is what makes the concept possible. Without decades of casks laid down year after year, a client asking for 1951, 1967 and 1974 would hear “sorry, nothing from those years”. This is the same company that last year bottled an 85-year-old single malt, presented as Artistry in Oak.

Price, availability and how to register

Only 15 Kenny Dalglish Vintage Moments box sets are available, and they are not sold through retailers. Buyers register their interest through the Gordon & MacPhail website

Gordon & MacPhail has not published a public price. £100,000. Given that single bottles of 1950s and 1960s Gordon & MacPhail vintages have traded in the thousands of pounds each, buyers should expect a significant figure for five rare vintages in one presentation.

The same registration route is open to private clients who want their own Vintage Moments set. Gordon & MacPhail plans to offer the service to only a very small number of clients each year.

Our take: who Kenny Dalglish Vintage Moments is for

This is a set for two overlapping groups: serious collectors of old Speyside and Gordon & MacPhail vintages, and Celtic, Liverpool and Scotland supporters with the means to own a piece of Dalglish’s story in liquid form. With 15 sets worldwide, most will end up in private collections.

For everyone else, the more interesting news is the service behind it. Being able to commission five vintages tied to your own life is something only a bottler with Gordon & MacPhail’s warehouse can offer. If you have ever wanted a whisky from your birth year that is genuinely from your birth year, this is the most complete version of that idea we have seen.
