Laphroaig Càirdeas 2026 French Oak is the 18th annual release in the Friends of Laphroaig series and the first to use 100% French oak maturation. Bottled at 52.6% ABV with no added colour and non-chill filtered, it brings freshly cut wood shavings, campfire smoke, dark chocolate, and star anise alongside Laphroaig’s signature saline, smoked-meat finish. Priced at £89 for a 70cl bottle, it is available exclusively to Friends of Laphroaig members from 23 May 2026 at the distillery and via Laphroaig.com.
In 2008, former distillery manager John Campbell released the first Càirdeas for the Friends of Laphroaig community, using ex-sherry and quarter cask spirit. Since then, the series has worked through port wood, Madeira, PX casks, Amontillado, triple wood combinations, and last year a cask-strength version of the popular Lore expression.
For the 18th release, timed to Fèis Ìle’s 40th anniversary, Laphroaig went somewhere the series had never been: 100% French oak maturation.

What the Càirdeas series is and why it has a following
Càirdeas (pronounced “car-chuss,” Gaelic for “friendship”) is Laphroaig’s annual limited release, available exclusively to members of the Friends of Laphroaig programme. Friends of Laphroaig is a community loyalty scheme that gives members a square foot of land on the distillery’s peat fields, access to presales, and first pick of limited bottlings before they hit wider retail.
The series has run every year since 2008, and the rule is simple: no release is the same as the last. That constraint has pushed the series through some genuinely experimental territory. The 2016 release used Madeira casks. The 2019 used triple wood. The 2024 combined the cask types from 2019 and 2021 into a single expression. Each one is an attempt to find a new angle on Laphroaig’s famously assertive spirit without losing what makes it Laphroaig.
French oak is the 2026 answer.
What French oak actually does to a peated whisky, and why it’s an interesting choice
Most Scotch whisky is aged in American oak, specifically ex-bourbon barrels from the United States. American oak is relatively tight-grained, contributes vanilla and coconut flavours, and integrates reasonably well with heavy peat smoke. It’s the default because it works.
French oak is different. It is more porous, contributes stronger tannins, and tends to push wines and spirits toward spice, dark fruit, and leathery complexity rather than vanilla sweetness. French oak is more commonly used in Cognac, Bordeaux, and Burgundy production, which means it interacts very differently with a heavily peated Scottish malt.
The question Càirdeas 2026 is exploring is whether that extra tannic grip and fruit-forward character can hold its own alongside Laphroaig’s iodine, coastal smoke, and medicinal intensity, or whether one profile simply dominates the other.
Dr. Calum Fraser, master blender for Scotch and Irish at Suntory Global Spirits, noted that the French oak created “a smooth, balanced whisky with notable depth and complexity,” and called out honeydew melon, tart cherries, and pomegranate as standout characteristics alongside the smoke. Those are distinctly French oak-driven fruit notes, and they’re not flavours that typically appear in Laphroaig.

How this compares to what Càirdeas has done before
The series has used wine and fruit casks before. The 2013 release used ex-port barrels. The 2020 Port and Wine edition went through ruby port barriques and red wine casks. The 2021 used PX sherry. Each of those brought sweetness to the peated spirit in different ways.
French oak is a different kind of intervention. It doesn’t bring the syrupy dried-fruit sweetness of PX, or the jammy red fruit of port. It brings structure, grip, and a more savoury fruit profile alongside its spice. In that sense it’s arguably a better match for Laphroaig’s own savoury character than the sweeter cask finishes the series has used.
Whether it’s the best of the 18 releases is something only the bottle will settle.
Fèis Ìle 2026 and why this release lands at a particular moment
Fèis Ìle (Gaelic for “Islay Festival”) has run since 1986 and the 2026 edition, running 22 to 31 May, is the 40th anniversary. The festival draws whisky enthusiasts from around the world to Islay for ten days of distillery events, exclusive bottlings, live music, and ceilidhs. Each distillery hosts its own day, and Laphroaig’s festival bottling is a fixture in the week’s calendar.
The Càirdeas series has been released at Fèis Ìle since it started. Friends who are on Islay for the festival get their bottles first and get to taste it in context, at the distillery, on the island where it was made. For everyone else, the presale opens online on the same day.
The 40th anniversary is a reasonable occasion to try something the series hasn’t done before. French oak over 18 editions is that.
