Tokyo-based importer Toko launches two Legit Highball cans, Silent Moon and Splash Star, exclusively at Lawson and Natural Lawson stores across Japan from 21 July 2026.
Both are 350ml at 8% ABV, and both use Isle of Raasay malt spirit for 99.9% of the whisky content. Silent Moon is whisky and soda only, leaning on chinkapin oak casks. Splash Star adds lemon peel extract and leans on rye whisky casks.

Why a Hebridean single malt is in a Japanese convenience store can
The canned highball market in Japan is enormous, but it is dominated by blended and grain whisky bases built for volume. What makes Legit Highball unusual is the base spirit: 99.9% of the whisky content comes from Isle of Raasay Distillery, a farm-scale operation founded in 2017 on a small island between Skye and the Scottish mainland.
The name is the pitch. “Legit” is English slang for legitimate, and Toko’s stated ambition is a canned highball built on genuinely good malt whisky rather than anonymous bulk spirit. At ¥370 a can, that is a bold claim, and it is exactly the kind of experiment the Japanese highball category makes possible. Nowhere else in the world can you buy a Hebridean single malt-based drink next to the onigiri.

The tax classification detail is worth noting. Silent Moon qualifies as whisky under Japanese law because it contains only whisky and soda. Splash Star’s lemon peel extract pushes it into the liqueur category, even though the whisky base is identical in origin.
Chinkapin oak deserves a word too. It is a North American white oak subspecies (Quercus muehlenbergii) that Raasay uses across its core range, typically contributing spice and dark fruit alongside a richer mouthfeel than standard American oak. Raasay’s rye casks, meanwhile, bring pepper and baking spice, which is why Toko paired them with lemon for the livelier can.
Who is Isle of Raasay Distillery?
Isle of Raasay Distillery was founded in 2017 by Alasdair Day and his business partner on Raasay, a Hebridean island with a population of 161. Day had already revived his great-grandfather’s blending recipes through the Tweeddale brand, and he brought a blender’s mindset to the new distillery: unusually for Scotland, Raasay uses hard water for production, runs custom-built Frilli stills from Italy, and takes an aggressive cut on the tails to produce a clean, precise new make.
The results came fast. Five years after founding, Raasay was named Scottish Whisky Distillery of the Year at the Scottish Whisky Awards 2022, and the distillery has collected awards steadily since. Its house style balances lightly peated and unpeated spirit across three main cask types, including the chinkapin oak that anchors Silent Moon.
For a distillery still under ten years old, licensing spirit into the Japanese ready-to-drink market is a striking move, and a sign of how seriously the brand is being built in Asia.
Can you buy Legit Highball outside Japan?
No. This is a Japan-only release, limited to Lawson and Natural Lawson convenience stores (excluding Lawson Store 100 and L Minimart, and stores without alcohol licences). There is no announced international distribution, and given the format and price point, we would not expect one.
If you are travelling to Japan after 21 July 2026, any Lawson with an alcohol licence should stock them while supplies last. For everyone else, the closest experience is making your own: Isle of Raasay’s core single malt (around £49) with good soda over plenty of ice gets you into the same territory, minus the convenience store charm.
Our take
We have not tasted these yet, so no verdict on the liquid. But the concept deserves attention. Single malt-based canned highballs at convenience store prices simply do not exist in Europe, and the fact that a young Hebridean distillery is the base spirit makes this one of the more interesting RTD launches of the year.
