Every bottle in the Royal Salute Small Batch Collection comes from the private cask reserve of a master blender who no longer holds the job. Sandy Hyslop retired from Chivas Brothers at the end of 2025 after 42 years in Scotch. The whiskies he set aside are now being released across Asia travel retail, and there is a finite number of them.
Royal Salute is widening distribution of the Small Batch Collection from 22 July 2026. The eight releases, numbered 001 to 008, were previously available through a handful of retailers in a small number of airports. From July they go to travellers across the whole of Asia, where stocks allow.
Two of them carry the most interesting cask work in the set. Batch 001 is a 27 Year Old finished in first fill American rye casks. Batch 008 is a 25 Year Old married in first fill Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, originally released as a Taiwan travel exclusive. Both sit at 40% ABV in 70cl purple and gold porcelain flagons, with batch number, distillation date and Hyslop’s signature printed on the presentation case.
What the Royal Salute Small Batch Collection actually is
Royal Salute is Chivas Brothers‘ luxury blended Scotch label, created in 1953 for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and named after the 21 gun salute. The range starts at 21 years old, which is where most blended Scotch ranges finish. Strathisla in Speyside, founded in 1786 and the oldest working distillery in the Scottish Highlands, sits at the heart of the house style.
The Small Batch Collection is a different proposition from the core range. Rather than a single blend released at scale, it is eight separate cask finishes drawn from Hyslop’s own reserve inventory, aged between 25 and 28 years, each bottled when he judged the cask had given what it was going to give. The finishes run from rye through French Limousin oak to Pedro Ximénez sherry.
That inventory does not renew. Kevin Balmforth took over as Chivas Brothers master blender in January 2026 after 25 years on the blending team, with Hyslop staying on as master blender emeritus on a consultancy basis. Anything future Royal Salute small batch work produces will be Balmforth’s selection, not Hyslop’s. The current eight are the closing chapter of a specific blender’s private stock.
Batch 001: a 27 Year Old finished in first fill rye casks
Rye finishing on aged blended Scotch is uncommon. First fill American rye casks carry a dry, peppery, slightly herbal signature that pushes against the honeyed softness Royal Salute is built on, which is the point of doing it.

Note the shape of that profile. The nose is soft and jammy, the palate turns tropical, and the spice arrives late rather than up front. If you were expecting a rye finish to deliver dill and pepper from the first sniff, this is not that.
Batch 008: a 25 Year Old in first fill Pedro Ximénez
Batch 008 is the richest thing in the collection. Malt and grain aged at least 25 years, married together in first fill PX casks, which is the most direct route to weight and dried fruit sweetness that a sherry finish can take.

The 40% question
Both bottlings are 40% ABV. At 25 and 27 years old and at travel retail luxury pricing, that will bother some readers, and it is a fair thing to be bothered by. A cask finish this specific delivers more of its detail at 46% or above, and reducing to minimum strength trims the edges off exactly the rye spice and PX texture the release is selling.
The counter argument is that Royal Salute has bottled at 40% since 1953, and the house profile is built around that softness rather than in spite of it. This is not a range chasing the cask strength crowd, and it never has been. Judge it on what it is.
Price and availability
Royal Salute has not published a recommended retail price for the Asia rollout, and travel retail pricing varies by airport and operator in any case. For a working reference point, UK specialist Hard To Find Whisky lists Small Batch #006, the earlier 25 Year Old PX release, at £459.95 for 70cl. Expect the 27 Year Old to sit above that.
Availability runs across Asia travel retail from July 2026, stocks permitting. This is airport-only at source, so European and North American readers are dependent on specialist retailers and the secondary market. Is it worth chasing?
If you fly through Asia regularly and you collect Royal Salute, batch 001 is the one to prioritise. A 27 year old blended Scotch finished in first fill rye is a genuinely unusual combination, and the collection is finite in a way that gives it a real ceiling.
If you are buying whisky to drink rather than to keep, the maths is harder. Around £460 buys a lot of 25 year old single malt at 46% or higher, and you would get more intensity per pound elsewhere. This is a bottle you buy for the cask experiment and the porcelain flagon, not for value per centilitre.
