The English 17 Year Old Heavily Smoked Rum Cask is the distillery’s heaviest peat, dropped into a rum cask and left there for 17 years. There are 177 bottles, bottled at 56.4% ABV and priced at £295 each, and it is the first release in the Founders’ Private Cellar range built on heavily smoked spirit.

That matters more than it might sound. The distillery ran its first spirit on 12 December 2006, so 17 years is close to the ceiling for anything made in Norfolk. There is simply not much English whisky of this age in existence, and almost none of it is peated.

At 177 bottles this is a genuinely small release, and marginally smaller than the 18 Year Old Rum Cask that closed the distillery’s 18th anniversary run at 174 bottles. Worth knowing before you assume it will still be there next month.

Why a rum cask and heavy peat is an interesting fight

Rum casks give sweetness, tropical fruit and a slightly rounded, syrupy texture. Heavily peated spirit tends to bulldoze all three. Put them together for 17 years and you would normally expect the smoke to win, leaving the rum influence as a faint sugary note somewhere underneath.

The distillery’s own account is that it did not happen that way, and that both sides survived. Their advice on the bottle is refreshingly blunt for a £295 release: “Buy this to drink, far more enjoyable than looking at it on the shelf.”

Water is apparently the lever here. Add a little and the smoke reportedly drops back sharply, letting the fruit come forward, which is a useful thing to know before you pour a dram neat and decide the whisky is one-dimensional. At 56.4% there is room to work with, and after 17 years in Norfolk’s relatively warm warehousing that is a healthy strength to have held on to.

Who The English Distillery are, and why the peat has history

The English Distillery, known for most of its life as St George’s, sits at Roudham in Norfolk, on top of the Breckland aquifer that supplies its water. James Nelstrop, a farmer, built it because he could not see why Norfolk barley had to travel to Scotland to become whisky. It became England’s first registered malt whisky distillery in more than a century, and its first mature release went on sale in December 2009.

The peat is not a recent experiment. To get the project started, the Nelstrops hired Iain Henderson, formerly the manager at Laphroaig, and heavily peated spirit was part of the plan from the first year. The distillery’s heavily smoked malt has been specified at around 65 PPM, higher than Laphroaig’s usual 45 PPM, although the finished spirit has always carried the fruit-forward house character rather than a straight Islay impression. David Fitt took over the spirit from 2008 and ran it until 2022, with Chris Waters now senior distiller on site.

A 17-year-old heavily smoked bottling therefore comes from the distillery’s earliest working years, when Henderson’s recipe was still setting the template.

Recent form is strong. The distillery took World’s Best Single Malt at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards with its English Sherry Cask, and currently trades on a World’s Best Small Batch Single Malt title for 2026.

Price and availability

£295 is the same price The English asked for the 17 Year Old Portuguese Cabernet Sauvignon single cask in 2024, and £100 less than the 18 Year Old Rum Cask that marked the distillery’s 18th anniversary in September 2025. For a 17-year-old single cask from any producer, that is not an unreasonable number, and it undercuts most Scottish single casks of the same age.

The whisky is sold direct from the distillery’s own shop with free UK mainland shipping over £99. Our take

If you already like The English and you like peat, this is the interesting bottle of the year from Norfolk. Seventeen-year-old heavily peated English whisky is not a category with alternatives, and a single rum cask makes it harder still to compare with anything else on the shelf.

If you are new to English whisky, £295 is a lot to spend finding out whether you like the house style. Start with the Heavily Smoked or the Rum Cask Matured at £75 and work up.

The one thing that does not quite add up is the six-bottle case discount on a 177-bottle outturn. Twenty buyers taking that offer would clear two thirds of the release. If you want one to drink rather than to flip, this is not a bottle to think about for a fortnight.
