We have a habit at Thedailywhisky. Whenever one of us is waiting for a flight, we end up in the whisky aisle of the duty free, scanning the shelves for the bottles you cannot buy anywhere else. It has become part of the trip, and some of the most interesting drams on our shelves at home came from a departure lounge rather than a shop.

So when The Glenlivet adds a new bottle to a range that exists only in travel retail, it goes straight onto our list for the next time we fly. This one is a 12 Year Old, finished in Caribbean rum casks, and it is designed as the way in to the whole Cask Master’s Collection.

What is the Glenlivet 12 Year Old rum cask?

The Glenlivet Cask Master’s Collection 12 Year Old is an age-stated Speyside single malt that has been selectively finished in casks that previously held Caribbean rum. The distillery’s aim was to add tropical fruit and vanilla while holding on to the soft, fruit-led house style The Glenlivet has been known for since George Smith licensed the distillery in 1824.

A collection built around the cask

The Cask Master’s Collection arrived in global travel retail in late 2025 as a permanent range of three aged single malts. Each one leans on a different wood recipe. The 14 Year Old combines American and European oak, the 16 Year Old is matured entirely in American oak, and the 19 Year Old pairs American and European oak with a selective finish in Scottish oak.

The new 12 Year Old completes the ladder at the bottom end, and it is the first expression in the range to bring a spirit cask finish into the picture. Where the older bottlings explore different types of oak, the 12 Year Old shows what a Caribbean rum cask does to The Glenlivet’s fruit-forward spirit.

The collection is built in celebration of Kevin Balmforth, who has shaped The Glenlivet’s cask programme since he became the distillery’s Cask Master in 2022 and is now credited by the brand as its Master Distiller. He joined Chivas Brothers in 1999, so this is a range made by someone who has spent more than a quarter of a century around these casks.

What does the Glenlivet 12 Year Old rum cask taste like?

We have not tasted this one yet, so the notes below are The Glenlivet’s own. We will come back with our impressions once we have found a bottle on our travels.

The Glenlivet Cask Master’s Collection 12 Year Old: official tasting notes

Nose: Fresh pineapple, mango, vanilla pod, coconut, light floral notes

Palate: Juicy apricot, ripe banana, toffee, red apple, creamy vanilla, orange zest

Finish: Medium length, citrus brightness, soft tropical warmth

ABV: 40% | Cask type:Selectively finished in Caribbean rum casks | Price: $75 (1L)

The notes make sense when you look at the wood. Kevin Balmforth chose Caribbean rum casks known for tropical sweetness alongside vanilla, toffee and honey. Those notes sit naturally on top of The Glenlivet’s orchard fruit and pear-led spirit, which is why the distillery describes the goal as enhancing the house style rather than reshaping it.

The Glenlivet also suggests serving it in a Caribbean Crush: 45ml of the 12 Year Old, 30ml pineapple juice, 20ml lemon juice and 15ml simple syrup, shaken and served over ice. It is an easy way to lean into the tropical side of the cask.

The Changi pop-up: nosing, food pairings and a hot air balloon

The Glenlivet chose Singapore Changi Airport for the world premiere, as part of the airport’s Changi First programme for new launches. The pop-up sits in Terminal 1 Departure Transit, next to the LOTTE Duty Free store, and runs from 16 October to 25 November 2026.

It is built as a small journey of its own. Travellers start at a sensory bar where they can nose the flavour notes behind each cask finish in the collection, so the brand ambassadors can point them towards the expression that suits their taste. The tasting itself comes with local food pairings such as pandan bites, and there is a Glenlivet hot air balloon photo booth for a souvenir picture.

Buyers also get a turn on a prize vending machine, with rewards ranging from an exclusive tasting of the 19 Year Old to branded travel bags, and a grand prize of tickets to a special destination.

Where can you buy the Glenlivet 12 Year Old rum cask?

This is a travel retail exclusive, so you will find it in airport duty free shops rather than on the high street or in standard online shops.

The 12 Year Old is on sale in Asia travel retail throughout October 2026, starting with Changi, before rolling out to global travel retail locations from 1 November 2026. If you are flying through a major European, Middle Eastern or American hub this winter, the Cask Master’s Collection shelf is the place to look.

For readers outside Asia, the November rollout is the date to note. Prices may vary slightly by airport and currency.

Who is it for?

The 12 Year Old looks like the natural entry point to the Cask Master’s Collection. It suits anyone who already enjoys The Glenlivet’s fruit-led style and wants to see how a rum finish adds pineapple, mango and vanilla on top. It also makes a lot of sense as a bottle to share: a 1 litre bottle at 40% ABV is built for pouring for friends, neat or in a long tropical serve.

If you want more weight and intensity, the 19 Year Old at 48% ABV is the step up within the same range. For travellers who like to come home with something they could not have bought at their local shop, the 12 Year Old adds a new option at the most approachable price point in the collection.

We will be looking for it on our next trip.
