Paul John Whisky new packaging: Goa’s single malt gets a reimagined elephant and a story to match

Paul John Whisky, the Indian single malt from John Distilleries in Goa, has unveiled new packaging and a refreshed brand identity built around the theme “A Journey into Indian Craft”. The redesign launches first on three core expressions: Nirvana, Brilliance and Bold. The wider portfolio, including the Select Cask range, will follow in phases over the coming months. A reimagined version of the brand’s elephant now links every bottle, while each expression gets its own colour, illustration and texture. Crucially, the whisky itself is unchanged.

The bottles have been a familiar sight in specialist shops for more than a decade. Now they look completely different, and Paul John is keen to stress that nothing inside them has moved.

What is the Paul John Whisky new packaging?

The Paul John Whisky new packaging is the visible part of a wider brand refresh announced by John Distilleries in early October 2026. The company describes it as a shift from talking mainly about the liquid to telling a broader story about the people, places and craft traditions that shape the whisky on its way from Goa to the rest of the world.

Design cues are drawn from three sources: Goa itself, Indian craftsmanship, and the sensory character of each expression. The elephant, long associated with the brand, has been redrawn and now acts as the common thread across the range, set inside a roundel carrying the “A Journey into Indian Craft” line.

Chairman Paul P John framed the change simply: “The liquid remains at the heart of everything we do.”

Brilliance, Bold and Nirvana: three colours, three characters

The first wave covers the three expressions most drinkers will meet on a shelf, and each one has been given a distinct visual identity that hints at what is in the glass.

Brilliance, the unpeated flagship, gets deep green with leafy, botanical illustration. Bold, the peated expression, sits in charcoal and black with gold detailing, which suits a whisky that leans on smoke. Nirvana, the lighter entry point and India’s best-selling single malt by volume, is the most vivid of the three in saturated orange with a decorative elephant wrapping the box.

The flavour notes printed on each box are a useful touch. They give a shopper standing in front of the shelf an honest steer before they commit.

Why Paul John is changing its look now

Paul John released its first single malt in 2012 and has since built one of the strongest export footprints in Indian whisky. The brand says it is now sold in more than 44 countries and has collected over 400 awards, which it uses to position itself as Asia’s most awarded single malt.

That growth is the context. Indian single malt has moved from curiosity to a serious category on international shelves, and a brand that started out introducing the idea of whisky from Goa now has room to tell a richer story about where it comes from. The new identity leans fully into that Indian origin rather than borrowing visual language from elsewhere.

Who makes Paul John whisky?

Paul John is made by John Distilleries, the company founded by Paul P John, which also produces the Original Choice whisky brand. The single malt distillery is in Goa on India’s west coast, using Indian six-row barley distilled in traditional copper pot stills. Some expressions, including Bold, use peat imported from Scotland.

Goa’s hot, humid climate is central to the character. Tropical maturation speeds up the interaction between spirit and oak, with a far higher annual evaporation loss than in cooler climates, so Paul John whiskies reach maturity at younger ages than an age statement from a cooler region would suggest. That is why most of the range carries no age statement: the spirit is ready sooner.

As with other Indian single malts, there is no single legal definition equivalent to Scotch whisky regulations for the category as a whole, so the “single malt” on the label refers to malted barley distilled at one distillery.

Is the whisky inside the bottle different?

No. Paul John has been explicit that the liquid and production approach are unchanged. If you already have a favourite in the old packaging, the new bottle on the shelf is the same whisky.

For collectors, the transition period is worth noting. Old and new packaging will sit side by side in shops for a while, and the Select Cask range is still to switch over.

Where can you buy Paul John Whisky in the new packaging?

The redesigned Nirvana, Brilliance and Bold are rolling out now, with markets receiving stock as existing inventory sells through. Paul John is widely available through specialist whisky retailers in the UK, Europe and the US, as well as in India and global travel retail. Expect a mix of old and new designs in shops for the next few months.

Our take

A packaging refresh rarely makes news on its own, but this one is a clear statement of confidence. Paul John has moved from “an Indian single malt” to a brand that wants you to know exactly where in India it comes from, and the new elephant does that job well. The flavour cues on each box are the most useful detail for drinkers, and the promise of unchanged liquid means fans have nothing to worry about.

The next thing to watch is how the Select Cask range and limited releases such as the annual Christmas Edition are treated under the new identity.
