Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak review: soft Yamazaki fruit meets the full body of Spanish oak

This Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak review covers Suntory’s new limited-edition single malt, which we tasted ahead of release at Whisky Live Paris 2026. It is made from whisky distilled in 2014 and 2015, matured in refill Spanish oak casks and bottled at 48% ABV. The refill casks let Yamazaki’s bright, fruity house character lead, while the Spanish oak adds a big, rounded body with dried figs and dried cocoa, and a subtle touch of smoke runs underneath. It launches in 20 markets from November 2026, at £215 in the UK. Our score: 8.5/10. A must-try dram for anyone who loves Japanese whisky or sherry-cask malt.

Some of the best moments at a whisky show come from bottles that have not reached a shelf yet. At Whisky Live Paris 2026, on our fourth visit to the show as a family team, that bottle was the Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak. We tasted it before its autumn release, and it stayed with us long after we had moved on to other stands.

What struck us was the combination. Yamazaki is known for a soft, elegant, fruit-led style, and Spanish oak is known for weight, depth and dark dried fruit. In refill casks, the two meet on equal terms, and the result is genuinely remarkable.

What is Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak?

Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak is a no-age-statement limited edition from Suntory’s Yamazaki distillery, built from malt whisky distilled in 2014 and 2015. Every component was matured in refill Spanish oak, meaning casks that had already held whisky at least once after their original sherry seasoning. The vatting includes some lightly and moderately peated Yamazaki malt, which explains the gentle smoke we picked up. It is bottled at 48% ABV in a 70cl bottle and released in 20 markets.

As a single malt distilled, matured and bottled at Yamazaki, it sits squarely within the Japanese whisky industry’s labelling standards introduced in 2021, which reserve the term “Japanese whisky” for spirit made entirely in Japan.

Suntory frames the release around wabi-sabi, the Japanese idea of beauty that deepens as something ages and changes. A refill cask is a fitting example: gentler than a first fill, with more space for the spirit to speak.

Who makes it: a century of Spanish oak at Yamazaki

Yamazaki sits between Kyoto and Osaka and is Japan’s first malt whisky distillery, founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii and owned by Suntory. Spanish oak has been part of its story from the start. Torii, who built his first business on fortified wine, is said to have filled the distillery’s earliest spirit into Spanish oak casks that had carried sherry to Japan.

That relationship still shapes the core range. Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve, 12, 18 and 25 Years Old all draw on components aged in American, Spanish and Japanese Mizunara oak, with Spanish oak bringing the fruitier, chocolate-tinged notes and deeper colour.

Recent limited editions, such as the 2020 and 2022 Spanish Oak releases, put that cask front and centre. This new release asks a different question: what does Spanish oak give Yamazaki once it has already had its first fill?

What makes it different: balance over weight

Spanish oak whisky is usually built on intensity. This one is built on balance. The refill casks still deliver the body, the dried figs and the cocoa that Spanish oak is prized for, yet they leave room for the distillery’s own bright fruit to come through clearly. You taste Yamazaki first, and then you taste the cask.

The second point of difference is the peated component. It is a small part of the vatting, and you notice it as a soft layer on the finish rather than a statement, but it gives the dram an extra dimension that keeps you going back to the glass.

Bottling at 48% matters too. It gives the figs and cocoa real presence on the palate while keeping the delicacy that makes Yamazaki so distinctive.

Price and availability: where to buy it

Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak review: our score and verdict at £215

Score: 8.5/10 Soft, elegant Yamazaki fruit carried on the full body of Spanish oak: a must-try dram.

This is a whisky that shows how well Suntory understands its casks. It takes the gentle, refined style Yamazaki is loved for and gives it the frame and weight of Spanish oak, without either side overwhelming the other. Figs, dried cocoa and a wisp of smoke make it rich enough for sherry-cask lovers, while the soft, bright core will win over anyone who comes to Yamazaki for elegance.

It is for collectors of Japanese whisky, for anyone who has enjoyed Yamazaki 12 or 18 and wants to explore the Spanish oak side of the house style more closely, and for sherry-cask fans curious to see what refill casks can do. If you want a heavy, first-fill sherry bomb, look elsewhere: this is a more refined proposition by design.

Value verdict: At £215, a limited Yamazaki at 48% is fairly priced, and well below where earlier Spanish Oak editions now trade at auction, with the 2022 edition fetching around £750.
