Two things stand out. The first is the gap. Second place sits 2.34 points behind the winner, which in a 100-point system judged across 15 criteria is not a rounding error. The second is the absence of Scotch from the top five entirely. Taiwan took three places, Virginia one, and a five-year-old Chinese distillery took the fifth.
Kavalan placed eight bottlings in the top 15 overall.
What Kavalan Peatist Oloroso Sherry Cask actually is
The Peatist Series is Kavalan’s ongoing look at what happens when you put smoke into a house style built on tropical fruit. The malt is lightly peated and imported from Europe, and the distillery adjusts its cut points during distillation to hold on to the smoke without losing the pineapple and mango character it has been known for since 2008.
This particular bottling spent its entire life in Oloroso sherry casks. No bourbon-cask base underneath, no finishing period bolted on at the end. Full-term Oloroso maturation is what gives the whisky its depth of colour and the dried-fruit weight that runs through both the distillery notes and the judges’ notes.
It is drawn from a single cask and bottled at 57.1% ABV, non-chill filtered and at natural colour, in 700ml.
The maturation context matters here more than it would for a Scotch. Yilan County in north-eastern Taiwan is hot and humid, and that pushes wood extraction along at a pace Speyside cannot match. A Kavalan of a given age is not comparable to a Scotch of the same age, which is why the distillery rarely puts age statements on anything. When it does, as with the 16-year-old Spirits Castle single casks released in June, it is treated as an event.

We have not tasted this bottling ourselves, so the notes above are the distillery’s and the competition’s, not ours. What is worth pointing out is how far apart the two sets read. The distillery leads on fruit and toffee. The judge leads on leather, ash and tea. That divergence usually means a whisky with a lot going on rather than one that presents a single obvious profile, and it is consistent with what a blind panel rewards.
Zerose Yang and the Master Distiller award
Kavalan’s Head of Research and Development, Zerose Yang, was named Master Distiller of the Year. It is a personal award, but the more interesting part is what it says about continuity.
Kavalan’s early style was shaped with the late Dr Jim Swan, who worked out how to mature whisky properly in a subtropical climate when nobody had a template for it. The distillery has spent the years since proving it can keep that standard without him, and the Peatist Series is arguably the clearest evidence: peat was not part of the original house identity, and integrating it without flattening the fruit is a technical problem, not a marketing one.
Kavalan now has 11 world’s best titles across 11 years, eight Distiller or Distillery of the Year honours, and more than 1,000 international gold medals. The distillery has been operating since 2005 under King Car Group, which had already spent four decades in beverages before it built a whisky distillery in Yilan.

At £130 to £150, a single cask, cask strength, full-term Oloroso-matured whisky from a distillery with this track record is not overpriced. Compare it to a full-term Oloroso Scotch single cask at similar strength and the Kavalan is competitive on price and ahead on scarcity.
This is for the drinker who likes sherry-driven whisky with smoke as a layer rather than as the point. If your reference for peat is Ardbeg or Laphroaig, recalibrate. Lightly peated Taiwanese malt in Oloroso is closer in spirit to a heavily sherried Highland Park than to anything from Islay, and the tropical fruit is not going away just because there is ash in the glass.
It is not for anyone who wants an age statement, and it is not for anyone who needs the bottle they buy to taste identical to the one that won. Single cask means single cask. Other Peatist Oloroso casks exist, and the one that scored 96.97 is the one the judges had in front of them.
