Kavalan Solist Oloroso Sherry Single Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky has been named Best of the Best Single Malt at the Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition (TWSC) 2026, the competition’s highest honour. It is Kavalan’s fourth consecutive Best of the Best title and its seventh world championship at TWSC. Kavalan was also named Best Asian Distillery of the Year, and took six of the ten places in the final ranking, including first and second. The Solist Oloroso is a single cask bottling at natural strength, non-chill filtered and at natural colour, typically around 55 to 60% ABV.

What Kavalan actually won at TWSC 2026

The headline is the Best of the Best Single Malt award, which sits above every category medal at the Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition. Kavalan Solist Oloroso Sherry took it, and in doing so gave Kavalan four Best of the Best titles in a row and a seventh world championship at the competition overall.

King Car Group Chairman YT Lee collected the certificate from TWSC Executive Committee Chairman Mamoru Tsuchiya. “We are honoured to receive TWSC Best of the Best award again,” Lee said, singling out the Solist Oloroso Sherry Cask as one of Kavalan’s most recognised expressions in Asia.

There was more than one trophy in play. Kavalan Distillery was named Best Asian Distillery of the Year, and Kavalan Concertmaster Vinho Barrique Finish was inducted into the TWSC Hall of Fame after taking Gold three years running. In the final top ten, six places went to Kavalan, first and second among them, alongside two Scotch whiskies and two Japanese whiskies. The judging panel pointed to Kavalan’s production philosophy and its consistency across cask styles as the reason.

That consistency showed up earlier in the year too. When the TWSC 2026 results were announced in May, Kavalan posted its strongest ever showing at the competition: a record seven Superior Gold and 15 Gold medals across sherry, Madeira, wine, peated and cask-finished releases.

Who is Kavalan

Kavalan Distillery sits in Yilan County in north-eastern Taiwan and released its first whisky in 2008, three years after opening. It is owned by King Car Group, a beverage business with more than 45 years behind it, and it draws its water from the meltwaters of Snow Mountain.

The distillery’s calling card is its climate-driven maturation, which produces a rich, creamy house style at ages that would look young on a Scotch label. That reputation is now backed by a shelf of trophies: Kavalan lists more than 1,000 gold or higher awards, and the Solist Vinho Barrique was named the world’s best single malt as far back as 2015.
